Mumbai : A day after autorickshaw fares were hiked in Mumbai, the authorities decided to increase taxi fares too -- from Sunday.

"The government has permitted a hike in basic fare from Rs.14 to Rs.16 for the first 1.6 km, and for every subsequent kilometre from Rs.9 to Rs.10," Bombay Taxi Association president Premsingh Dhnna Singh told IANS.

The new fares would be effective from Sunday on all the 55,000 metered taxis which ply in Mumbai, he said.

The decision followed a meeting between representatives of various taxi unions and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority (MMRTA) this afternoon.

On Tuesday, the MMRTA permitted a hike in autorickshaw fares, from Rs.9 to 11, to take effect from midnight Wednesday, in Mumbai and Thane.

The fare hikes followed a flash strike by a large section of autorickshaw and a section of taxi drivers.
